Every few weeks someone asks on Reddit whether any lead generation method still works. Those threads get hundreds of replies, and they split into two camps. One camp says everything is dead: cold email is spam, cold calls are ignored, LinkedIn is saturated. The other camp quietly describes getting clients every month.
Read enough of them and the difference is not the channel. It is what the second group does before they send anything.
What the people with results describe
They pick a narrow target
Nobody with steady results targets "small businesses". They target roofers in one state, dentists in three cities, tour operators in one coastal town. Narrow targeting means they can write about the prospect's actual situation, and they can reuse what they learn from one conversation in the next.
They send fewer messages
The numbers people share are small. Twenty personal messages a day. A hundred to two hundred emails per batch, with three to five replies. One agency owner described moving from a 0.8 percent reply rate to 5.1 percent over four months, mostly by cleaning the list and writing to fewer, better matched businesses. Volume was going down while results went up.
They lead with something they noticed
"Your listing has not been claimed." "You have 960 reviews and no way to book online." "One in five of your reviews is a complaint about waiting times." A specific observation proves the message was written for them, which is the only thing that separates it from spam.
They protect their sending reputation
The people who say cold email stopped working have often burned their domain with a list full of addresses that bounce. The people still getting replies verify every address and warm new inboxes slowly. More on that in why cold emails bounce.
They use the channel the owner actually reads
For an owner-run business with a mobile on its listing, that is often a phone call or WhatsApp, not email. See finding clients on WhatsApp.
So, is it working?
Generic lead generation is getting worse every year, because inboxes and phones are better at filtering it and owners are tired of it. Relevant lead generation is working as well as it ever did, arguably better, because so few people bother to do it.
The catch is that relevance takes research, and research takes time. That is the part worth automating.
LocalBuyerFinder builds a narrow list for you (one business type, one city or a whole state) and tags each business with what is going on: no real website, spending on ads, review trouble, an unclaimed listing, no online booking, plus the owner where their site names one and a tested email. You still write the message. You just start every message already knowing what to say. See the plans.
